My personal experience in creating
As a formally trained artist, I bring the experience of an inconsistent and calibrated sign, taking care of the contrast of the weights of the lines (line weight) and the perspective in the pages. I remember when – working on the first sketches – I refined the balance between the delicate features of Nezuko's face and the complexity of her finely decorated kimono. I wanted to create images that children can color with enthusiasm and, at the same time, understand the fundamentals of drawing: balance, rhythm and chromatic depth.
Practical advice for children
- Vary the weight of the lines: use a soft pencil for the face contour (B2), a harder one (HB) on the kimono: it helps to perceive the relief of the fabric.
- Try simple perspective: draw a blurry background behind Nezuko to make her stand out.
- Choose mixed mediums: light watercolors for the background and colored pencils for the details of the kimono and hair.
